On July 5th we loaded up the camper and a few other things (see picture) and headed up Poudre Canyon to Upper Michigan Reservoir in State Forest State Park. Grandma and Grandpa Hemmert drove from Utah and met us there!
It was so funny to see the reaction of other people on the road when they saw our bike/canoe/camper/kid getup. Neil is a genius with his homemade bike and canoe racks. He can tie anything up with a few straps and bungie cords!
The lake was lovely but a lot of the pines were killed by the pine beetles.
We started fishing as soon as camp was set up. Emily is a bit mad in this picture because Mara and the boys all caught fish right way.
The string of fish grew pretty quickly! We could hardly believe how easy it was to catch those fish!
Mara especially loved fishing and soon was quite independant.
Hayley decided to turn fishing into one of her Young Women projects. She learned how to rig a line, catch fish, untangle lines, clean fish, cook fish, and eat fish (I'll spare you the pictures).
The canoes were a blast. After we had caught our fill on the shore we started trolling in the canoes.

Neil was the motor while the girls trolled. Neil didn't fish a whole lot himself because he was busy teaching the kids. He claims a little bit of each fish as his own though. :)
We kept and cooked 10 fish. Most of the kids actually liked them! Who wouldn't like anything fried in butter!?
We also had Dutch oven pork ribs and potatoes. Yum!
Yes, we rode the bikes. It was a fun first mountain biking experience. Now that we know how to transport them, we will do it again!
Sounds like fun! Someday, I will be at the point where the fun will out weigh the crying babies and sleep deprived toddlers :)
